CELEBRATE ISRAEL PARADE - WALK WITH EZRA USA

By OLGA HENKIN, Ezra USA Staff

I can't think of a better reason for thousands of people to gather together in order to honor and to celebrate something that has become the world's largest show and entertainment than the Israel Day Parade.

It evolved into tradition for Ezra USA volunteers to proudly walk down Fifth Avenue holding Israeli flags, wearing Jewish stars and shouting "We Stand with Israel" slogans in order to unite with Israel in a very colorful, vibrant and diverse way. Our Madrichim and volunteers form a very strong bond towards Jewish education, Jewish people and the State of Israel through a number of post-Taglit activities. On June 5th we will Celebrate Israel Parade marching down Fifth Avenue and we will make a statement that we stand with Israel today and always!

We will see you on Sunday, June 5th!

SHALOM SPAIN TRIP

Two months ago, a group of forty-five young men and women embarked on a Ezra World Trip to Spain. They visited Barcelona, Madrid, Toledo, Seville, Granada, and Cordoba. They saw ancient Jewish sites, old and new Jewish quarters, and medieval Synagogues. Along with the Jewish tour of Spain, the Ezra group explored the non-Jewish highlights of this beautiful country, including the Gaudi Museum and

architecture, Flamenco, bull fighting, the Sagrada Familia, the Prado Museum and much, much more. One of the highlights of the trip was the Shabbat Dinner in Madrid. David Roitman, Executive Director, joined Shalom Spain Ezra group on Shabbat where everyone enjoyed a wonderful traditional Friday night dinner with the local Jewish community.

DID YOU KNOW?

- Jerusalem Day

On June 1st the state of Israel will celebrate the Yom Yerushalaim - The Jerusalem Day. This day is commemorating the reunification of Jerusalem and the establishment of Israeli control over the old City in June 1967. The Chief Rabbinate of Israel declared Jerusalem Day a minor religiou

s holiday to celebrate the 6-day victory and for answering the 2,000-year-old prayer of "Next Year in Jerusalem".

The day is marked by state ceremonies, memorial services for soldiers who died in the battle for Jerusalem, parades through downtown Jerusalem, lectures on Jerusalem-related topics, singing and dancing, and special television programming. Schoolchildren throughout the country learn about significance of Jerusalem, and schools in Jerusalem hold festive assemblies. The day is also marked in Jewish schools around the world.

As this day is coming we would like to share with you 10 interesting facts about the holiest city:

1. Jerusalem is the city of readers. On average 68% of the population reads one book per month, and 33% of the population reads three books per month.

2. Around 79 people living in Israel have the name Jerusalem.

3. On average 1,100 tons of trash are picked up and thrown away and 8,500 km of road are swept daily.

4.  Jerusalem has over 2,000 archeological sites.

5.  Jerusalem has over 70 cultural centers that teach art, music, poetry, literature, and performance to young people.

6. There are 30 annual festivals in Jerusalem, the most in all of Israel.

7. There are 26 wineries in Jerusalem.

8.   A lion is the emblem of the municipality of Jerusalem.

19.   There are over 6,000 species of plants in the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens.

10.   Jerusalem has one of the highest rated night clubs in the world: Haoman 17.

Madrichovka
The Madrihim of EZRA USA had a little get together, or a Madrihovka as they like to call it on October 14th 2010. Madrichovka comes from the word Madrich (Hebrew for group leader/guide) and it is a long-standing Ezra USA tradition - a meeting where the Madrichim meet with Ezra staff to discuss past events and future plans.  With the executive director of EZRA USA, David Roitman in town it was time to get together to provide feedback, suggestions, and discuss ideas regarding programs, events and operational questions. This meeting, as is customary, was loud, boisterous and very productive - issues were raised, new programs introduced and ideas vigorously debated.

The Madrichi discussed and learned how the new board of directors will help bring about changes by opening more doors and providing EZRA with more exposure into the Russian Jewish community and at many events within the community. That it will provide EZRA with a lot of networking opportunities. Due to the ever changing technology and growth of social networks the Madrihim decided that they would utilize this; using Facebook they will create a group just for them, where they would be able to discuss idea for events and programs and decide on what would be best.  Not everyone always responds to emails or is able to show up to a meeting, but everyone does sit on facebook at least an hour a day. Helping the Community is something everyone in EZRA finds very fulfilling and wonderful. With the success of the Veterans Project, and the lone soldier fundraiser, it was decided that the Madrichim would like to do more projects for the community in the very near future. Ideas such as, A Hanukah Toy Drive, visiting nursing homes, cleaning Jewish cemeteries, and so on were brought up  as future projects for the community.  Currently the Aviv Leadership program participants and the staff are working on A Hanukah Toy Drive. In collaboration with Larger than Life, we will be delivering toys to sick children in Israel.  We are collecting toys, electronics, and monetary donations. To find out more about this project please visit our website.

This is a key component of how Ezra USA works, with the Madrihim sharing their thoughts, bringing up concerns and creating events and programs using their ideas. When EZRA USA started out eight years ago, it started from scratch with a small group of Madrichs and staff. Those same people created events and programs such as the Aviv Leadership program, Eretz, Friday Night Dinners and got the word out about EZRA. New people joined and became Madrichs and from there more programs and events came in to being: The Veterans Project, Fundraising for Lone Soldiers, Hanukah and Purim Parties, the Mega Reunion and so on. The Madrchi built EZRA up from scratch and now EZRA USA is moving into a new phase and onto the next level.

Russian moguls join forces in philanthropy

6656-1_mMOSCOW (JTA) – A closely allied group of prominent and controversial Russian billionaires has thrown its largesse behind a multinational philanthropic fund to develop Jewish identity among Russian speakers worldwide.

The Genesis Philanthropy Group already is providing targeted grants in the United States, Russia and Israel for a bevy of Jewish educational, travel and community development programs.

Operating in relative anonymity since its founding in September 2007, the group represents a new effort to bolster Jewish identity among Russian-speaking Jews worldwide – with the financial wherewithal to back it up.

While figures like Lev Leviev and Vladimir Goussinsky have made names for themselves in the world of Jewish philanthropy, this appears to be the first time that a group of top Russian Jewish business figures have launched a coordinated philanthropic effort.

Grantees describe the group as businesslike in its approach to philanthropy. The board has outsourced its grant-making functions to philanthropic management organizations in the three countries where it operates.

The foundation also differs from predecessor groups backed by wealthy Russians in that the founders have sought to keep their distance from the groups they are funding with grants for hundreds of thousands of dollars at a time.

EZRA USA
