Wednesday, Aug 31   Day 2 Johannesburg – Cape Town

Upon arrival in Cape Town (at 1. 10 PM) you will be met by a tours representative who will assist and transfer you by coach to
Cape Town Hollow Hotel, a beautiful 4 star hotel in Cape Town nestling in the shadow of Table Mountain. In addition to having some of the most breathtaking uninterrupted views of Table Mountain, the Cape Town Hollow is situated in the historical centre of Cape Town. It’s overlooking the historic Company Gardens, established by Jan van Riebeeck. This Cape Town hotel is in immediate proximity to the Houses Of Parliament, the Cultural Museum, the South African Museum, Planetarium, South African Library, Provincial Administration and the High Court.  This Cape Town hotel is ideally situated to take advantage of the city's vibrant night life; 2 minutes on foot to trendy restaurants, clubs and bars in Kloof Street and Long Street, 5 minutes on foot to the CBD's St George's mall or the chic Gardens Shopping Centre. It is also only 5 minutes by car to the famous Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, the lower Cable Car Station for Table Mountain and the well known beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay. The wellness centre at the hotel is equipped with a heated swimming pool, sauna, gymnasium and 2 massage and beauty treatment rooms. The rest of the day is at leisure in the fascinating city of Cape Town. Cape Town is a city with a diverse range of attractions, sights and activities to offer and it has something for everyone. From the landmark beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay to the vibrant V&A Waterfront and Cape Town city center, the award-winning wine farms of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek - time spent in Cape Town will not be forgotten. It is a sophisticated city at the gateway to a majestic continent. TCape-of-Goodhe Mother City is a place where old and new harmoniously converge - in history, architecture, cultural pursuits and the essence of its people. The city is dominated by a towering, table-shaped mountain, set on a peninsula of soaring, rocky heights and lush valleys, where two oceans converge - Indian and Atlantic. Natural beauty and the fast pace and bright lights of a great urban center meld effortlessly here. Firmly positioned on the international map, Cape Town offers a myriad of things to do and places to see, whatever your tastes, inclinations or budget.  Overnight in Cape Town Hollow Hotel.

Thursday, Sep 1     Day 3 Cape Peninsula in Cape Town

After breakfast depart on your full day Cape Peninsula. See for yourself how this spectacular southern tip of Africa became known as the 'Fairest Cape'.  The Fairest Cape…and it surely is!
Duiker-IslandYou’ll soon see for yourself where and why it earned its name. Sit back and relax, while taking a drive along the exquisite stretch of coastline known as Millionaire’s Paradise – from Camps Bay and Clifton to the exclusive beach hamlet of Llandudno – towards the charming working harbor of Hout Bay; if you so choose, you can embark on an up-close-and-personal Seal Island cruise (own account). Back on terra firma, the tour winds its way along the legendary Chapman’s Peak Drive, hugging the cliffs and relishing the breathtaking ocean views, before arriving at our lunch spot of choice (own account): the wild and beautiful Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, an integral part of the world-renowned Cape Floral Kingdom. Returning back along the coast towards the City, visiting the historic naval port of Simon’s Town and the endearing penguin colony at Boulder’s Beach, having experienced The Fairest Cape of All according to Sir Francis Drake. Overnight in Cape Town Hollow Hotel.

Friday, Sep 2      Day 4 Mountain & Jewish Tour of Cape Town

In the morning, after breakfast the group will be taken on a scheduled morning Table Mountain tour. Be ready for the ultimate Mother City experience. Board one of the two cable cars for your journey to the top of Table Mountain. The new revolving cable cars give stunning views over the city. The summit of Cape Town’s world-famous landmark is 1,086 meters/3258 feet above sea level and the mountain itself is a national monument. It is covered with a wide variety of wild flowers and is the natural home of the famous silver tree. From the summit you can marvel at the awe-inspiring 360-degree view of the city. Later in the day visit some Jewish sites of Cape Town for a half day, including the SA Jewish Museum and Holocaust Centre. The South African Jewish Museum (/www.sajewishmuseum.co.za) was officially opened by former president Mr Nelson Mandela in 2000 and is a major attraction in CT. It is situated on the heritage site of the beautiful Gardens Synagogue, the Cape Town Holocaust Centre and Gitlin library. The Museum narrates the story of SA Jewry from its early beginnings. Its entrance is situated in the Old synagogue that dates back to 1863. The museum is interactive and high-tech, providing a host of experiences that include audiovisual presentations, multimedia, reconstructed sets and interactive computers. You will stop for lunch at Cafe Riteve.* In the late afternoon get back to hotel to get ready for Shabbat. In the evening Shabbat Dinner at the Jewish Community Center, which is just few blocks from the hotel. Overnight in Cape Town Hollow Hotel.

The park exists within the transition zone between the dry Kalahari and wetter Lowveld vegetation, commonly referred to as "Bushveld". Unlike any other large park, unique overlaps of mammals, birds and vegetation occur because of this transition zone.  knysna_elephant_parkVirtually all the animal species of southern Africa exist here, including healthy populations of Lion, black and white Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo and Leopard - Africa's "Big Five". It focuses on the legacy of the Jews in Spain + history, art, architecture etc. Besides visiting medieval synagogues, the Jewish Museums, ancient Jewish quarters, you will explore non Jewish sites & activities in order to appreciate the beauty of Spain.

intl_spain_bullfightSpain was once home to one of the world’s largest and most prosperous Jewish communities under Muslim and Christian rule. The glory and pain of Spain and their deep Jewish heritage leads us to a history that goes back 2000 + years and epitomized by key figures like Maimonides, Ibn Ezra and poet Judah HaLevi. In fact the word Sefarad (Sephardic Jews) originally meant Spain. But Today, there are approximately 40,000 Jews living in Spain, mainly of North-African  Sephardic  descent.

“Espana" is an exquisite symphony of experience, with a vital connection to world history and enduring Spain’s Jewish heritage. This timeless land of explorers vibrates with the colorful passions of swirling flamenco and guitars; you will find its deep beauty unforgettable. From this exotic land emerged great sages and Kabbalistic mystics of the "Golden Age," as well as the origins of Sephardic Judaism, with its fascinating "Eastern" flavor. Enjoy a blend of Moorish, European and Jewish influences as we travel through the legendary land. A delight for the senses and for the soul!

History44JewsOfSpain230x

A Brief History of Jews in Spain

granada_monumentBefore 1492 Spanish Jews comprised one of the largest and most prosperous Jewish Communities under Muslim and Christian rule. Due to the union of two Spanish Dynasties through the marriage of Isabella de Castilla and Fernando de Aragon, Caltholic Spain was unified and in order to purify Christian Spain, the Jews were expelled. By the end of July, 1492, more than 100 000 Jews had fled Spain during the Spanish Inquisition which was established in 1478 by Ferdinand and Isabella in order to maintain Catholic orthodoxy in their kingdoms. The inquisition was not definitively abolished until 1834 during the reign of Isabel II.

Although expelled in 1492 as a result of the inquisition, many Jews stayed in Spain and were baptized, thus appearing to be Christians. However they continued practicing their religion in secret and these Jews were called Conversos or New Christians. If they were caught, they were burned alive and thousands of Jews were burned at the stake during this period. After the Expulsion, some of the Conversos escaped to Western Europe and Latin America, where they were able to practice Judaism openly. A considerable amount of Conversos actually married into the Spanish aristocracy.

Today the Jewish community of Spain is primarily based on waves of post-war migration from Morocco, the Balkans, other European countries and as of the 1970´s and 1980´s largely from Latin America. There was a huge influx of Argentinean Jews, mainly Ashkenazim escaping from the military Junta.

You will look into the millennium of history of Jews, who are known to have lived in China since at least the 7th century (and continuing today) and may have existed there as early as several centuries before the Common Era.
